Audio Grail Rejuvenating beauty - Restoring precision Stunning both audibly and visually!!! professionally restored and serviced by Audio Grail an early version twin spark suppressor, flush strobe, raised logo faceplate type 401. Please see below for detailed images of this incredible 401 Chassis The chassis of this 401 displays it’s 100% original paint finish. No dust bug marks, stains or paint loss this early 401’s chassis is in near mint condition Mechanics All of this 401’s linkages, nuts, bolts, springs and washers have been completely stripped, lubricated and rebuilt. The results are spotlessly clean mechanical components that function effortlessly One of the main sonic detractors with even New Old Stock 401’s is the problem of ‘Rumble’. A significant factor in the cause of rumble in the 401 is the deformation / distortion of the idler wheel. A flat or warped idler wheel will ‘thud’ on the platter transferring the noise straight to the stylus which acts as a microphone. The idler wheel of this 401 is BRAND NEW purchased from Perfect Sound (Garrard 301 on eBay) All Audio Grail Units feature New idler wheels. In short, regardless of appearance NO 40 year old rubber idler wheel is in the same condition it left the factory….This of course has a major effect on the sound. The idler wheel you will note from the image above has a perfectly sharp flat edge not rounded or worn and displays no buckle, dryness or hardening to cause excessive rumble. Platter The 100% original finish 50Hz strobe platter is in superb condition, the strobe markings are sharp and bright, the underside and top are very tidy indeed. The platter matt is supple displaying no ‘dryness’ or deterioration the center disk displays very light marks only. SERVICING In addition to the new idler wheel, this unit has also been furnished with brand new idler housing grommets, x2 NEW spark suppressors, and new brake pad Spindle / Bearing / Housing To achieve the highest performance from the 401, it is critical the oil spindle housing, bearing and spindle are thoroughly cleaned of decades old hardened / sticky contaminates. To this end the spindle / bearing components of this unit have been Ultrasonically cleaned professionally with the correct detergent (Exploding millions of bubbles over the surface of the objects to remove several decades worth of built up detritus both internally and externally.) The housing was then treated to a heated oil bath to re charge the spindle bushings, the spindle housing was then rebuilt receiving a final oil charge via the top reservoir. The result is a smooth spotless unit that offers superb sonic results. Motor strip and service The shaded pole induction motor of this 401 has been Completely stripped including the top and bottom bushes which are held in place buy rivets. Removing the riveted bottom plate allows access to the bottom spherical bearing felt oil-retaining washer. It is critical for these components to be completely cleaned and the porous bushings to be heat cleansed and re-soaked in oil for the full potential of the Garrard 401 to be realised (Please see images below) This process frees up the bearings perfectly ready for precise alignment Functionality & Sound The result of the servicing and restoration works completed on this 401 are second to none. The unit powers up instantly to speed whilst remaining very, very quiet and smooth. To test the unit it was mounted first on an Audio Grail Cherry wood plinth paired with an SME 3012 series 1. Playback featured no detectable rumble with wonderful bass and mid range in the soundstage.
