Chassis The 301 available in this sale has been professionally re finished in Acrylic Enamel containing Poly-isocyanate Resin by a leading UK company. This finish is an exact original colour match especially mixed for Audio Grail. Once heat cured the finish is much harder than cellulose (Spray can finishes) The result is truly wonderful with the highest possible luster and sheen that feels like silk to the touch the touch. Linkage The original finish to the linkages of a Garrard 301 were plated in Cadmium. Over time Cadmium tarnishes and looses its luster. The linkages also accumulate years of baked on grime, dust and contaminates which affect their function. All of this 301’s linkages, nuts, bolts, springs and washers have been professionally re-plated by a company with thirty plus years of high end experience. The linkages and associated component parts have been electroplated uniformly with a ‘yellowed’ Zink (This superb finish was chosen as Cadmium is poisonous) The results are spotlessly clean mechanical components that function perfectly, look factory fresh and gleam like treasure Platter The 100% original finish 50Hz NON-strobe platter displays very minimal signs of deterioration , overall this original finish platter is in good shape. The outer showing edge displays minor paint loss as does the top and underside. The platter mat is supple displaying no ‘dryness’ or deterioration. Motor strip and service The shaded pole induction motor of this 301 has been Completely stripped including the top and bottom bushes which are held in place buy rivets. Removing the riveted bottom plate allows access to the bottom spherical bearing felt oil-retaining washer. It is critical for these components to be completely cleaned and the porous bushings to be heat cleansed and re-soaked in oil for the full potential of the Garrard 301 to be realized . This process frees up the bearings perfectly ready for precise alignment Spring replacement All springs on the 301 are vital in terms of functionality. The motor springs isolate vibration coupled with rubber sleeves -often these are stretched. The affect of this is a motor which is noisy in operation. (The motor will not hang correctly in it’s ‘cage’ causing uneven wear to the motor bushings and idler wheel.) The idler wheel springs are critical in order to ensure correct engagement of the idler against the pulley. The pitch linkage features three small springs, which are often stretched causing difficulty with pitch control. The 301 available here features a completely new set of springs and rubber sleeves ensuring the finest possible function Further works All Audio Grail 301’s come replete with: A brand new brake pad, Spark suppressor, set of mounting bolts and idler housing grommets. All electrical connection points are treated with Deoxit Gold TM Functionality & Sound The result of the servicing and restoration works completed on this 301 are outstanding. The unit powers up instantly whilst remaining very, very quiet and smooth. To test the unit it was mounted first on a two tier slate plinth with an SME 3012 series 1. The musicality proved to be exceptional and sublime. The famed 301 slam was of course exciting and engaging – No listening fatigue here!.
