For sale is an unusual Garrard 401 transcription turntable. What’s unusual about this 401 is that it’s been unused and carefully stored since it was brought to the USA in 1971. My father went to Britain on a business trip and visited a friend who was a hi-fi lover. When my father heard his friend’s system, he made an offer for the friend’s Garrard 401 on the spot and arranged to take it back. He was impulsive, if nothing else, for he never got around to using this 401! Garrard introduced the 401 in 1965, which prompted an immediate review by Gramophone. Garrard discontinued the 401 ca. 1976, and about 74,000 were sold, according to Ken Kessler in his review of the 301 and 401. (Incidentally, Mr. Kessler prefers the sound of the 401 over the 301, and he claims Terry O’Sullivan of Loricraft, Garrard restorer extraordinaire, reluctantly admits the 401 is superior.) The physical condition of this 401 is immaculate. Never used in the USA, so never abused! The original metalescent charcoal enamel finish looks factory fresh, with no chips, dustbugs or scuffs. This 401 is a relatively early model, Serial No. 21629, with the desirable flush-mounted strobe light (with bulb still in place) and the solid control panel with the raised GARRARD 401 logo. The chrome control panel and trim are still bright, and the panel labels are unworn and sharp. In some of the pictures, there is a flash reflection, but there is no damage! By the early ’70s, Garrard had cut corners manufacturing the 401, but this late ’60s model looks superb. The 50 Hz platter is in fantastic condition, with no dings or dents, and the paint and stroboscopic engravings on the rim look untouched, defying its age. The underneath side is spotless. Also included are an instruction manual, a full-size mounting template for the plinth and 4 mounting screws/washers/bolts. Handling this 40+-year-old turntable, I’m struck by the quality of its construction. Its understated mid-’60s design still looks sharp. Garrard built these transcription turntables to an unsurpassed standard in the 1960s, for clients including the BBC, which is why they’ve become a hi-fi icon. This is verified by the number of 401s in use today and the continued interest in Garrard’s legendary idler transcription turntables. I would keep this 401 if I didn’t already use an EMT turntable.
