Goodmans LS3/5A BBC Monitor Speakers 15 ohms Sequential Picture(s) and Description:

Hello and welcome to my auction. This week I'm offering a mixed bag of items for sale (clearing some space in the spare room); there's some photographic gear including M42 + Pentax K mount lenses (plus assorted cameras and flashes etc), some vintage electrical items (including an Avometer) and some miscellaneous bits & pieces (including some Minton china). Don't forget to check out my other auctions and if you win more than one then I'm always happy to combine postage. Without further ado this particular auction is for: Pair of Goodmans BBC LS3/5A 15 ohms Loudspeakers (Walnut) These speakers have been in my family since new and are now looking for a new home. My Dad bought them from Woolworths in Aylesbury, back in the day when it had three storeys and a dedicated "Hi-Fi" department upstairs (next to the cafe for those who remember it). He had an eye for a bargain and dragged us kids up there every Saturday for what seemed liked months to go and see these speakers, each time bending the salesman's ear about how rubbish the Goodmans were compared to other LS3/5As / they'd never sell them in Woolworths / they were getting tattier by the week through standing on display / etc. Eventually the salesman caved in and sold them to him for a mere £125 (well below the advertised price) probably just to get rid of him and return to a quiet life. Chalk one up to Dad's persistence! He used the Goodmans for quite a few years, firstly on a pair of spiked stands and then on a pair of Rogers AB1 bass extenders. Shortly after the arrival of the Rogers AB1's he was offered a pair of new-old-stock Harbeth 11 ohm LS3/5As at a price he couldn't say no to, so for a while the house constantly revolved as he tried different combinations of LS3/5A's both with and without the Rogers extenders. Eventually he decided he liked the Harbeth/Rogers combination the best (although he preferred the Goodmans to the Harbeths as standalone units - contrary to the prevailing opinions of the hi-fi press) and he still uses that set-up to this very day. Personally I preferred the Goodmans to the Harbeths both with and without the bass extenders, but my tastes in music were different and by then I'd got my own house and a pair of Castle Dovers that took up most of the front room... So the Goodmans were passed on to my sister who has been their keeper for the last 15 years or so. Now she didn't really appreciate what she had and so they have spent most of that time hooked up to a Sony music centre and mounted on a couple of cheap wall brackets (I think I just heard all the LS3/5A aficionados letting out a collective groan at that snippet of information). They were also subjected to the indignity of having foam pads stuck on their tops to hold various Christmas decorations up each December (stop tutting at the back there) which I've removed but which have left marks where they were stuck on. Now my sister has a new house and a new man to go with it and he's brought with him an all-singing all-dancing Samsung surround sound system (which my sister loves because it's got wireless speakers). She asked my Dad if he wanted the Goodmans back but he doesn't, so she's asked me to sell them for her on eBay - hence this listing you're reading now. That pretty much covers the history of this particular pair of speakers except to say that in all that time they've never been taken apart. I know there are those of you out there who like to tinker with their LS3/5As, especially the Goodmans variants as it's so tempting to replace the speaker terminals with something a little more substantial, but these are sealed exactly as they left the factory. In fact I think I may have been the first person to remove the front grilles when I took the photos for this listing! And so we move onto the description... The first thing to say about these speakers is that they work perfectly and they sound like LS3/5A's! In other words they won't fill your house with thudding bass but they have a wonderful neutral character as befitting their status of being monitor speakers. Anyway, if you're reading this then I'm sure you already know what LS3/5A's sound like and if you don't then try Googling for thousands of pages of opinions - both positive and negative (hey, all cult items have their detractors too you know). The serial numbers on the back of the speakers are sequential - I know this matters to some fans. The Goodmans are based on the original BBC 15 ohm design and are set apart from other manufacturers' models by their use of tiny speaker connection posts - basically just screws designed to take bell cable. This never bothered my sister but my Dad soldered a couple of O-rings onto pairs of banana plugs when he used them, that way he could easily connect to thicker cables. Sadly these have been lost somewhere along the way but it shouldn't be too taxing for the buyer to make up a similar solution. Cosmetically these could do with a good polish with some proper furniture grade stuff. You can judge the condition for yourselves by the pictures I've included above - the pits in the bases near the corners come from the spiked stands that they originally stood on, the scuffed patches top & bottom from the removal of the aforementioned foam pads and there are a couple of small dents but nothing major. The grilles are in a fairly good condition and still have their original badges attached, and underneath the grilles everything looks pretty much like new (which is why I think I'm the first to actually take them off). I believe the official colour is "walnut" but I'm not 100% sure of that one. There are no boxes or other accessories with these as they were ex-shopfloor demonstrators and came as-is when new. Obviously I'll make sure they're well packaged for delivery though, although due to their weight the postage prices are on the expensive side to say the least! For this reason I would welcome collection in person at the end of the auction. Also please note that although I will accept returns on these the refund will be for the purchase costs only, not the postage costs. I think that covers everything, if there is anything I've forgotten then don't hesitate to get in touch. I've told my sister these may fetch a couple of hundred quid and I think she's already spending the money in her head...
NOTES ON POSTAGE - PLEASE READ UK BUYERS: The postage price quoted is for Parcelforce Express48 with £450 of insurance cover and tracking. The speakers weigh a hair over 10kg so I've based the price on an 11kg package (to allow for packing materials) which comes to £19.50 including £50 of cover. Extra cover is charged at £1 for the first £100 of value and £4.50 for each £100 thereafter. By my calculations £34 will cover the speakers for up £450 - if the auction finishes at a significantly higher price and you want full cover then tell me at the end and I'll issue a revised invoice with the actual amount included. OVERSEAS BUYERS: The postage price quoted is for Parcelforce Global Priority (an airmail service) and includes £500 of insurance cover as well as tracking. Extra cover is available at a cost of £4.50 per £100 of cover - if you require this then let me know at the end of the auction and I will issue a revised invoice. I am not prepared to falsify the value of these on Customs forms, nor declare them as a "Gift" as that would invalidate the insurance - the buyer is fully resposible for any extra duties that may be charged by his/her own Customs authorities. And that's all I have to say (you'll be glad to hear) except if you have any questions feel free to ask but please don't ask me to end the auction early because I never have before and I don't intend starting now. Bidding for this item starts at an incredibly low 99p and there is NO RESERVE! Thanks for dropping by my auction and good luck! Cheers, Paul Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
