Although long before JBL was a name of a company these 3 letters were the initials of a man who almost single handedly shaped the audio industry to what it is today. James Bullough Lansing was one of the very few people in the audio industry who had a true gift for audio engineering, it was something he was born to do. In the year 1914 at the age of 12 Lansing built a transmitter so powerful it interfered with operations at a US naval base 300 miles away, government officials were sent to his home to dismantle the transmitter and issue a stern warning never to build one again. This warning may have swayed him to devote his efforts to one particular aspect of audio, loudspeaker design. More than any other single person James B. Lansing is responsible for the development of the high fidelity speaker. His speaker designs and theories created in the 1920’s still serve as the foundations in which all speakers built today are based upon. His genius has been attributed to his unquenchable thirst for perfection, a perfection which is reflected in the products he produced and the products that continued to be produced by his company long after he past on. The JBL L-40’s were introduced in 1977 with a production run until 1982 and an original selling price of $570.00 for the pair. They are a significant member of the famed “L” series speaker family, which gained its technology directly from JBL’s professional studio monitors. The L40’s satisfied the much needed demand for a smaller speaker system that retained the same high grade sonic performance of which people came to expect from JBL products of the era. The L40’s utilize the same high quality components of its larger siblings but in a compact, acoustically optimized enclosure. Sonically the L40’s are hard to beat for their size. Bass is surprisingly deep and well detailed while mid to high frequencies are rendered with the signature smoothness and accuracy of the L-Series. Some of the systems many features and functions include; 127H 10” Woofers The 127H incorporated JBL’s unique SFG (Symmetrical Field Geometry) magnetic structures. There are two innovations in the SFG design. One is the symmetrical magnetic field around the voice coil gap, which reduced second harmonic distortion below 100Hz. Conventional designs have an asymmetrical field around the gap, so that the interaction of the field and the voice coil in non-linear. The 2nd SFG innovation in the Flu Stabilizing Ring encircling the pole piece. This reduces the second harmonic distortion above 100Hz. Because the low frequency drivers of the L40 have bandwidths extending well above 100Hz, SFG results in both cleaner bass and cleaner midrange. 033 High Frequency Driver This 1-inch dome radiator provides high acoustic output with clarity and wide dispersion. The dome is constructed of two layers of phenolic-impregnated linen at 45* angles, providing stiffness and dimensional stability. The dome and voice coil optimize mass, area and strength at the lightest weight possible. The result is a 1-inch dome small enough to provide excellent sound dispersion (which is a function of the relationship between the length of the sound wave reproduced and the diameter of the diaphragm reproducing it), yet light and strong enough to provide high acoustic output. The voice coil is large for a high frequency unit because it follows the circumference-rather than occupying the center-of the radiating surface, resulting in high power handling capacity and improved transient response. Special clamping rings assure linear movement and prevent extraneous reflections from the dome compliance, further contributing to distortion-free performance. The net result of these and other refinements is accurate, powerful high frequency performance extending beyond 30 kHz. All drivers are working and sound great. The foam surrounds on the woofers, which naturally deteriorate with age, have been recently replaced with exact replacements. The repair was properly, surrounds were attached to the rear of the cone as recommend and originally done by JBL. Cabinets are very clean, you may see a scratch or two upon close inspection, although noting major.
