Pioneer SX-1250 Stereophonic Receiver Description: Pioneer's SX series is perhaps the greatest stereo receiver line ever to come out of the Hi-Fi Golden Era. In fact, many audiophiles and service technicians consider the SX-1250 to be one of the best-constructed, best-sounding receivers ever built, period. These Pioneer "SX" receivers were built to the highest standards and capable of the utmost sonic performance, while remaining extremely flexible. They ranged in size and power from the modest SX-400 series to the massive SX-1980. The SX-1250 was introduced in 1976 with a production run until 1978 and an MSRP of $900.00. At the time it was released, the SX-1250 was renowned as the most powerful receiver in the world, and has unquestionably won its place in history as one of the greatest performing receivers ever designed. The SX-1250's bone-shaking 160 watt per channel rating is actually quite conservative; it is able to drive just about any pair of speakers with power to spare. In fact, unlike its successor, the SX-1280, the SX-1250 has no current limiting circuitry and is actually rated at 200 watts per channel into a 4-ohm load - that's 15 watts a side more than the "185 watt per channel" SX-1280 can put out into the same load! The construction and design quality of the SX-1250 is second to none, leading to its excellent reputation of durability and reliability. Matched up with any receiver, including the high-dollar modern day ones, very few approach the outstanding sonic quality of the SX-1250. Its sound is utterly amazing; extreme clarity, great warmth, tremendous power, and unparalleled detail throughout the entire audible range, regardless of volume level. Unlike today’s audio market of mass produced equipment made with the cheapest components by the cheapest laborers to make the biggest profits, the SX-1250 was constructed with the idea of simply being the best in the world by bringing the highest quality receiver to the consumer for the best price without cutting any corners. After your initial audition, you too will see that Pioneer definitely succeeded. Features: 160 watts per channel at 8 ohms, 200 watts per channel into 4 ohms! Power In and Pre Out jacks allow unit to be used with separate preamp or power amp 30Hz & 8kHz tone filters for ultra clean low and high ranges Dual bass controls (50Hz and 100Hz) for precision low frequency control Dual treble controls (10kHz and 20kHz) for precision high frequency control Tone defeat switch for the purest, most accurate reproduction of any source material Three separate speaker outputs, any two of which may be used together Numerous Inputs - Phono 1, Phono 2/Mic, AUX, Tape 1, and Tape 2, and 'Adaptor loop' (can be used as Tape 3!) Signal Strength & Tuning Meters for ultimate reception of AM & FM bands -20 dB audio muting switch - perfect when the phone rings! 25µS / 75µS rear panel FM De-emphasis switch FM Multipath button FM Muting button Three rear accessory outlets And more - read the SX-1250 Pioneer Promo Literature here! Condition: Cosmetically, this unit is in amazing condition - at least a 9 out of 10. The wood cabinet: Almost perfect. You really need to go over it inch by inch to find any imperfections, and there aren't many. The cabinet's edges are nice and sharp and there are no chips or missing veneer anywhere. In fact, the top walnut veneer on this particular unit has a deep, uniquely beautiful sheen to the grain, almost an iridescence. It's perhaps the prettiest walnut receiver cabinet I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. The faceplate and chassis: The initial impression is, wow - this thing is perfect! The faceplate shines, all lettering is crisp, complete, and unworn, even the knobs and switches sparkle like new. As you start to carefully inspect the faceplate though, you'll notice some microscopic scratches here and there - mostly on the top-facing section. Again, these are virtually invisible unless you're just a few feet away with the lighting at just the right angle. The rear connections are all clean, uncracked, and in excellent shape. The AM rod antenna, broken on so many of these classic Pioneers, is in place and adjusts properly throughout its travel. The original factory preamp to amp jumpers are also present. These receivers are offered frequently on eBay, but there just simply aren't many left in this kind of condition, not to mention with original boxes, packing, and paperwork. Don't let this beauty get away - you may never find one this nice again! Functionally, she's simply a 10 out of a possible 10. This receiver is completely stock - all original factory electronic components are present, including the original NEC factory output transistors, so that wonderful Pioneer sound has never been compromised by inexpensive third-party replacement parts. All dial and indicator lamps are functional. All controls work smoothly and are noise-free as are all lever and pushbutton switches. The tuner section is amazingly sensitive, not only pulling in the stronger local FM stations in stereo, but pegging the signal strength meter using only an 8" wire as an antenna! Finally, the amp - channels well-balanced, nice and quiet at idle, with no hum or abnormal noise in either channel. This receiver simply performs magnificently all around. If you're looking for a top-notch '70's receiver literally built to last a lifetime, you could easily spend hundreds more, but you simply won't find a better looking or performing example than the Pioneer SX-1250. Packing: The most well-preserved, flawless vintage receiver becomes a pile of junk if it gets damaged in shipping. This piece has a huge advantage in that the original factory packaging is available to protect it, however, it's not enough. I will provide an additional outer box to further protect the receiver and its original packaging, and since Pioneer already has provided double boxing, this additional packaging will result in your receiver being triple-boxed. In addition, all airspace in the original box will be filled with bubble wrap and/or packing peanuts to afford additional protection during shipping. This receiver will arrive in the same incredible condition you see in the pictures above.
